700% Increase in Attacks

13584924897?profile=RESIZE_400xThere has been a 700% increase in cyber-attacks against Israel over the past two days when comparing to the time period before 12 June, cybersecurity firm Radware said on 15 June.  The data indicate a "significant escalation in malicious network activity targeting Israeli infrastructure," the firm said.  "The 700% surge in malicious activity within just two days stems from cyber retaliation operations by Iranian state actors and pro-Iranian hacker groups, including DDoS attacks, infiltration attempts targeting critical infrastructure, data theft, and malware distribution campaigns," said Ron Meyran, VP of Cyber Threat Intelligence at Radware.[1]

Iran-Israel conflict - The increase in attacks observed by Radware occurred shortly after the news of Israel's strikes on Iran became public, the firm said, adding that it saw an increase in activity by "threat actors aligned with Iran on public and private telegram channels."

Iranian state-sponsored cyber groups are expected to intensify their operations aimed at disrupting infrastructure and psychological influence," the firm said.  Government websites, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and critical infrastructure are among the variety of targets for the attacks, the company said.

This current military escalation underscores the growing geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel, manifesting not only in physical confrontations but also in cyberspace. Analysts emphasize the importance of robust cyber defenses for nations, particularly in regions marked by prolonged conflicts. The reliance on critical infrastructure means that even small breaches can have cascading effects on national security and civilian life.

The escalating cyber conflict between Iran and Israel serves as a stark reminder of how intertwined modern warfare has become with digital arenas.  As traditional military confrontations continue to unfold, cyberspace emerges as an equally potent battleground.  The sophistication and scale of attacks, including Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) and targeted infiltrations, highlight the urgent need for nations to fortify their digital defenses against adversarial states and actors.

Military cyber experts also underscore the importance of international collaboration in cybersecurity, advocating for shared intelligence and coordinated responses to mitigate risks posed by state-sponsored cyber groups.  Education institutions, research organizations, and private-sector players are pivotal in fostering resilience through innovation and enhanced security protocols.

Moreover, analysts warn of the cascading effects that such cyber offensives may have on global economies and civilian life.  While infrastructure disruptions can directly affect financial systems and communication networks, the psychological implications of prolonged cyber warfare on populations are equally concerning.  Governments and organizations worldwide are encouraged to integrate comprehensive cyber strategies to counteract these threats effectively.

As a geo-political cause and effect example, oil prices - US oil surged more than 7%, while Brent crude oil settled at around a 5% single-day increase as of 10 pm ET on 13 June 2025.  A day earlier, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures also jumped as much as 14% in the late hours.  Though the highs came down, as it settled at around $73 a barrel on the morning of 13 June.

Last week saw some of the biggest increases for the oil benchmarks in recent years, comparable to the surge in March 2022, weeks after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.  The oil benchmarks also posted their biggest weekly gains since October 2022.[2]
