Polish game developer Big Cheese Studio was hit by a hacker attack early on 24 January, its management confirmed to the Polish Press Agency (PAP).
The attack happened around 0400 GMT and the company's website was still down as of 1123 GMT. Big Cheese Studio has taken security measures and will make an official statement later on Friday, PAP wrote. It also reported, citing users on social media platform X, that the hackers had gained access to the company's game code systems and personal data of its employees, and were threatening to make that data public unless they were paid 100,000 zlotys ($24,887) in crypto currencies.[1]
The Big Cheese Studio was founded in 2012 by two game industry veterans, John Smith and Joe Brown. The company soon started working on its own independent IPs, with its debut title being “City Defender”, a tower defense game for iOS devices. Since then, the studio has released several successful titles, including “Super Smash Bros. Quest” for the Nintendo Switch, and “The Last Of Us: Remastered” for the PlayStation 4. In 2020, the studio released “Darksiders: Genesis” for PC and consoles.
The Big Cheese Studio’s mission claim “is to create memorable, engaging, and entertaining experiences that bring joy to the hearts and minds of our players. It wants to be the premier destination for quality, innovative gaming experiences that will push the boundaries of what is possible.”[2]
Big Cheese Studio could not be immediately reached for a comment.
