A gang of hackers who targeted the private King Edward VII’s Hospital are threatening to reveal the health data from the Royal Family unless they are paid £300,000 in Bitcoin. The hospital notably treated Kate, the Princess of Wales and the hackers have claimed they have ‘X-rays, letters from consultants, registration forms, handwritten clinical notes, and pathology forms.’[1]
The gang is referred to as ‘Rhysida,’ which is a venomous tropical centipede, and previously targeted the British Library in an information attack. GCHQ and police are investigating the gang after the ransom demand was posted.

In the demand, the gang said: ‘Unique files are presented to your attention! Data from the Royal Family! A large amount of patient and employee data. Sale in one lot!!’
A spokesman for the UK’s NCSC, the computer crime arm of GCHQ, confirmed: ‘We are engaging with King Edward VII’s Hospital to understand the impact.’ There are worries that even if the hospital pays the ransom, the data will not be returned.
A former British military intelligence colonel recently told media sources that the data could be copied and sold to other underworld cybercrime gangs. A spokesman said the hospital has taken steps to mitigate the ‘impact’ of the attack and launched an investigation.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are both former patients of the hospital, but most notably, the Princess of Wales spent time in 2012 with morning sickness.
