The Five Eyes alliance of cybersecurity agencies from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States has issued a joint warning that artificial intelligence is rapidly increasing the speed, scale and sophistication of cyber threats. In the coming months, advanced generative AI models are expected to support full cyber-attacks against major businesses and government bodies. The agencies urge organizations to view these risks as a core business concern rather than solely a technical matter.[1]
Business leaders are advised to apply established cyber security principles. These include making secure-by-design and secure-by-default the standard approach and deepening layers of protection across systems. New vulnerabilities, including zero-day flaws, will continue to appear. These must be addressed swiftly and proactively to limit exposure.
The Five Eyes agencies outline several immediate steps for organizations. These involve accelerating patching processes, shrinking attack surfaces, addressing legacy systems, reviewing identity and access controls, and preparing response plans for incidents. The alliance also encourages organizations to apply AI within their own security operations. AI tools can support faster threat detection, better software quality, improved monitoring of unusual activity, and quicker incident response. “Success will not come from having the most tools. It will come from getting the basics right, acting quickly, and integrating cyber security into core business strategy,” the Five Eyes agencies stated in their joint message. “We must act before and be prepared to adapt and withstand evolving threats.
“Cyber resilience is not an IT issue; it is central to operational continuity and market trust. Leaders who act now will reduce exposure, strengthen resilience, and build confidence with customers, partners, and investors. Those who delay will face growing and avoidable risk.” The agencies reiterated that integrating AI into security operations enables organizations to detect vulnerabilities more rapidly, enhance quality, monitor behavior, and respond to threats more quickly.
In expert comment, Andrew Woodford, CTO of network security provider Titania and former Director of Engineering at Darktrace, said, “Everything we need to prepare for AI-accelerated cyber threats needs to be based in cybersecurity fundamentals. Following Five Eyes’ statement, there will be a temptation to panic: faster patching, new defensive AI tools, gathering intelligence on new threats."
"But the most important advice is to make sure that core fundamentals are in place: least privileged access, network segmentation, and reducing exposure through hardening and continuous monitoring. The shift from patching to removing vulnerabilities, to mitigating the effects of exploits should have already happened; if it hasn’t, AI makes it necessary.” Woodford concludes.
