Trend Micro has always taken extremely seriously its commitment to secure the connected, digital world. But we also know that in the fight against cybercrime, its resources are most effective when shared and combined with others working towards the same goals. That's why Trend Micro has no issues about teaming up with other security vendors, as well as academics and law enforcement agencies. Red Sky Alliance has always held this collaborative approach.
This "better together" approach has seen us train hundreds of law enforcers over the past decade or so. In a concerted effort to combat the growing threat of cybercrime, INTERPOL, and many private cyber security firms are joining forces to establish a united front for ensuring a safe and secure digital environment worldwide. This strategic partnership aims to enhance cyber expertise within law enforcement agencies, empowering them to effectively investigate and counter cybercriminal activities.[1]
An unwavering commitment – Cyber Security’s unwavering commitment to building a safer digital world is founded on great technology. Researchers and engineers are at the forefront of developing comprehensive platform-based capabilities to help protect 500,000 businesses and governments across 65 countries. These products offer powerful threat prevention, detection, and response across the IT environment without overburdening stretched security and IT teams.
Its researchers have handled over six trillion threat queries and blocked more than 146 billion threats for these customers in 2022 alone. A large part of that was down to our global threat research. It's driven by the efforts of 450 researchers and scientists who work around the globe and the clock to understand how changes in technology and user activity can signal the emergence of new threats.
But researchers and analysts know that this alone is not enough. More organizations need to benefit from this expertise than our customers. Sharing collection TTP’s is the key to a healthy and safe cyber environment. That is why sharing private industries’ expertise with law enforcement partners is important. For instance, up in New Hampshire the US Secret Service[2] chairs an information sharing group who help each other in various cyber investigations. They also promote cyber security training exercises.
Building cyber-expertise in law enforcement - Recognizing the critical importance of training in building cybercrime investigation capabilities, Trend Micro has been actively providing comprehensive training sessions to law enforcement personnel since 2014. With a strong focus on imparting practical skills that investigators can apply throughout their careers, Trend Micro has conducted over 35 training sessions, benefitting hundreds of law enforcers. A recent five-day INTERPOL session, held in Manila, Philippines was an integral part of the US-sponsored Cyber Capabilities and Capacity Development Project (C3DP). The training focused on advanced malware analysis and catered to experienced cybercrime officers responsible for malware analysis in their respective agencies across the region. Leveraging the expertise of Trend Micro's elite internal group, the Threat Experts University, the session provided in-depth instruction on hands-on static and dynamic malware analysis, utilizing a wide array of analysis tools.
Outstanding participants from the training session will have the opportunity to join INTERPOL's newly established Regional Expert Group for Malware Analysis (REG-MA). This group will serve as a regional hub for knowledge exchange, peer mentoring, and collaborative investigative support. By creating such platforms, the training of law enforcers in cybercrime investigation techniques can have a transformative and cascading effect on the overall fight against cybercriminals.
While security vendors play a crucial role in combating cybercrime, the battle remains challenging as new threat actors continually emerge. To gain the upper hand, it is imperative to equip law enforcement agencies with confident and skilled investigators capable of tracking down and bringing cybercriminals to justice, thus deterring potential wrongdoers from engaging in illicit activities.
