Fairlife has temporarily stopped producing its milk in the United States after a cyber attack, the company said. A portion of Fairlife's systems were accessed by an unauthorized third party in a "ransomware event," parent company Coca-Cola said in a statement on 16 July.[1]
The milk brand said it notified law enforcement and is continuing to investigate the incident, but has suspended production in the United States. Fairlife also said its product quality and safety have not been affected. "The full scope, nature and impacts of the incident are not yet known," the company's statement said.
It's unclear if the production disruption will impact the supply of milk in stores. Coca-Cola did not provide any additional information when contacted by USA TODAY.
Here's what we know so far: Fairlife has temporarily suspended production of its milk in the United States after a ransomware attack. In light of the attack, Fairlife, which also operates in Canada, said only its US production has been impacted. "The company is working diligently to complete the investigation and restore the systems and impacted operations," its statement said.
Fairlife was formed in 2012 as a partnership between Select Milk Producers and The Coca-Cola Company, with the goal of creating higher-protein, lower-sugar dairy products using an ultra-filtration process. The brand launched regionally in 2014 and expanded nationally in the United States in 2015, marketed as lactose-free ultra-filtered milk with more protein and less sugar than conventional milk.
Its product line grew beyond milk to include Core Power protein shakes and other nutrition-focused dairy beverages, helping Fairlife become part of Coca-Cola’s broader strategy to diversify beyond traditional soft drinks. In January 2020, The Coca-Cola Company acquired the remaining stake in Fairlife LLC, making it a wholly owned subsidiary while allowing it to continue operating as a stand-alone business. The company has continued expanding production capacity in the US and Canada, including facilities associated with Coopersville, Michigan; Goodyear, Arizona; and Peterborough, Ontario. Today, Fairlife is positioned as a nutrition-focused dairy brand offering lactose-free, high-protein, lower-sugar products under the Coca-Cola portfolio.
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that restricts access to computer files, systems, or networks, according to the FBI. Perpetrators of a ransomware attack also demand a ransom payment for the return of computer access.
