Infrastructure provider Cloudflare has published its Q2 2026 Internet Disruptions report, examining how apparently minor technical failures and external events can disconnect entire countries from the global network. Drawing on visibility across more than 330 cities in over 125 countries, the company used traffic data from Cloudflare Radar to document the scale and causes of the quarter’s most significant outages.
On 5 May 2026 a maintenance error during a DNSSEC key rollover at DENIC, the registry responsible for Germany’s .de domain, produced invalid digital signatures. Resolvers worldwide that validate DNSSEC treated every .de domain as untrustworthy and returned SERVFAIL errors. Millions of German websites, email services and applications became unreachable until normal operation resumed at 23:15 UTC. Cloudflare observed a sharp rise in .de query volume because failed answers could not be cached and had to be retried repeatedly.
On 21 June 2026 a fiber cut near Saint Lucia severed one of the island’s principal links to the wider Internet. Traffic on the network of major provider Karib Cable fell essentially to zero for most of the day. At national level, overall traffic dropped by approximately 60 per cent compared with the previous week, illustrating the vulnerability that arises when an island economy depends on a limited number of submarine and terrestrial cables.
Beginning 26 May 2026 Iran began restoring national Internet access after a near-total shutdown that had lasted 88 days since 28 February 2026. Traffic initially reached 40 per cent pre-outage levels and later climbed as high as 90 per cent before settling at around 59 per cent of the earlier baseline. The restoration remained partial and selective rather than a full return to previous capacity.
Governments in Sudan and Iraq imposed a combined 13 deliberate outages timed to national examination periods. Sudan recorded ten shutdowns between 13 and 23 April 2026, each lasting roughly 3.5 hours. Iraq enforced three shorter outages of about 90 minutes each in June. Meanwhile traffic to Amazon Web Services’ me-central-1 region in the United Arab Emirates stayed depressed throughout the quarter after physical damage caused by regional conflict and drone strikes.
Super Typhoon Sinlaku, the strongest Pacific storm of the season so far, passed just north of Guam in mid-April. Although the island avoided a direct hit, tropical-storm-force winds and resulting power cuts drove traffic down by as much as 80 per cent on 13–14 April 2026. Two major earthquakes in northern Venezuela on 24 June produced immediate sharp drops in HTTP traffic, while a power outage in Tanzania on 27 June 2026 caused a multi-hour collapse in connectivity.
The report notes that these diverse events, maintenance errors, cable cuts, government orders, conflict damage and natural disasters produce remarkably similar impacts on users: sudden loss of websites, email and applications. Cloudflare emphasizes that the Internet’s everyday stability depends on layers of redundancy that are often invisible until one of them fails.
