The Port of Long Beach has opened a new Cyber Defense Operations Center (CDOC) dedicated to protecting the seaport from cyberattacks, utilizing monitoring and threat analysis to secure the digital infrastructure of one of the busiest maritime gateways in the United States.
The Port of Long Beach in California says that it currently stops an attempted cyberattack approximately every three seconds, highlighting the constant threat to the $300 billion in trade handled annually by the complex. The new center will allow the Port to double its on-site cybersecurity staff. “Supply chain security is key to supply chain resilience, and with data and digital infrastructure being an ever-increasing part of maritime trade, effective cybersecurity is more important than ever to the global supply chain,” said Dr. Noel Hacegaba, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Long Beach.[1]
The project was launched in collaboration with partners including the US Coast Guard and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. “As cyberattacks become more sophisticated, we need to stay ahead of the curve with technology that allows us to detect cyber criminals. This center will play a major role in keeping one of the nation’s busiest seaports safe from cyberattacks,” said Frank Colonna, President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners.
The CDOC is part of a broader regional shift toward centralized cyber defenses in the San Pedro Bay, following the earlier launch of a similar resilience center at the neighboring Port of Los Angeles.
The Port of Long Beach currently handles about 9.6 to 9.9 million TEUs per year based on recent reported throughput, which is a good proxy for its present operating capacity. Recent sources report 9,649,724 TEUs in 2024 and 9.9 million TEUs in 2025, both record levels. The Port of Long Beach has stated a long-term goal of reaching 20 million TEUs annually by 2050. Current effective through put/capacity: about 10 million TEUs/year, long-term target capacity: 20 million TEUs/year by 2050.
