A fugitive has been arrested in Thailand after hacking into a police database to delete his criminal record, cybercrime investigators have stated. Why does this sound like the 1986 comedy ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’? The main character hacked the school computer system to change his grades and attendance records. Police said Sahachart Chuaybamrung, aged 26, had taught himself advanced computer skills using AI chatbots to help him break into the Royal Thai Police systems to delete his five arrest warrants. Chuaybamrung left school at the age of 12 and accumulated several arrest warrants related to robbery and fraud throughout his youth.[1]
The police arrested him in Phuket after they traced alleged online fraud, seizing computers, drugs, and a handgun during the operation. Chuaybamrung used AI chatbots in the development phase to acquire the necessary technical hacking skills. These skills were subsequently used to hack into police and corporate systems, causing direct harm, including attempts to delete arrest warrants and significant financial losses to a private company. The resulting harms include violations of the law, damage to property, financial loss, and the disruption of police operations.
He tried to delete five outstanding warrants before his recent arrest, when police found methamphetamine pills and an unregistered gun, according to Thailand's Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB). After an alleged robbery in Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand, he fled to the Thai-Myanmar border and went into hiding. He taught himself advanced hacking skills using AI chatbots in the hope of wiping his criminal record and avoiding future prosecution.
Police said his attempts to modify the police database failed, leading him to target companies with vulnerable security systems and offer illicit hacking services. In June, he hacked into an online platform that offered mobile phone credit and game top-ups by manipulating its payment system to create fake transactions. The credits he allocated himself were used to buy digital products, resulting in losses of 200,000 baht (£4,415) for the company, police reported.
The company filed a report with the CCIB, prompting a fresh investigation which eventually tied Mr. Chuaybamrung to the initial attempted police hack. Police traced him to an apartment in Phuket, where they found 80 methamphetamine pills, a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun with ammunition, four mobile phones, and several computers used in his operations. Chuaybamrung is charged with various offenses under Thailand's Computer Crime Act, as well as illegal possession of a gun, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, and drug use. The CCIB stated that the investigation was continuing while they analyzed his seized electronic devices for further evidence of criminal activity.
