Connected Car - Cyber Safety & Security

13717742853?profile=RESIZE_400xThe automotive industry stands at a cybersecurity crossroads.  Connected cars have evolved from mechanical transportation into software-defined computers on wheels, creating unprecedented convenience alongside equally unprecedented risk.  Modern vehicles contain over 100 million lines of code, which is more than most fighter jets, yet lack the cybersecurity rigor needed to keep them safe.  RunSafe Security’s 2025 Connected Car Cyber Safety & Security Index[1] reveals that consumers increasingly understand and are concerned about vulnerabilities in their vehicles.  However, the automotive industry has yet to respond with the transparency and security measures drivers now desire.

In a survey of 2,000 connected car owners across the US, UK, and Germany, our findings reveal an automotive cybersecurity landscape where consumer awareness has outpaced industry response.  Cybersecurity has become a purchase driver that can make or break brand loyalty, yet most automakers are failing to capitalize on this market opportunity.

 Key Findings:

  • Safety trumps privacy: 79% of drivers prioritize physical safety from cyberattacks on their vehicles over protecting personal data at risk on their car, understanding that automotive cyber threats can be life-and-death
  • The confidence gap: While 65% believe remote hacking is possible, only 19% feel “very confident” their vehicle is protected
  • Supply chain anxiety: 77% recognize third-party components as cybersecurity risks, with 83% demanding transparency about software origins
  • Purchase power: 87% say strong cybersecurity influences buying decisions, with 35% willing to pay premium prices for enhanced cyber protection on their car
  • Avoidance behaviors: 70% would consider buying older, less connected vehicles to reduce cyber risk

These findings demonstrate that connected car cybersecurity has evolved from a technical concern to a fundamental consumer expectation that directly impacts purchasing behavior, brand loyalty, and market positioning.
